Ham Radio – Basic Facts and Information
You have probably heard about the ham radio or amateur radio from some of your friends but you still do not know what they are talking about. It is true that it is popular among a certain group of people but they are not as popular as, say, mobile phones or computers. If you want to know more about amateur radios, here are some of the basic facts and information about them.
Amateur radios rely greatly on radio waves or signals. These waves can send or receive different types of data in different forms such as music, pictures, conversations, and so on. For hams, they transmit voices or sounds. Of course, you cannot see these transmissions because they happen invisibly.
These amateur radios do not need wires or cords to transmit data. One ham radio set consists of a receiver and transmitter. This complete set or unit is called a transceiver. Of course, you cannot use a ham if you only have one of the two parts. These gadgets can also catch signals in a wide range of frequency bands.
Amateur radios use antennas. You can mount the antenna on top of a tree, your house roof, a tower, or any other high places. You can even mount the antenna on your car’s trunk if you are using the radio while driving or travelling.
To be able to use the amateur radio legally, you need to get a license first. You need to take an exam and you will be asked questions about theories related to electronics and some regulations about use of amateur radios. You can buy reviewers for this license. Whether you are 16 or 60, you can take the exam and be an amateur radio operator or ham operator.
Amateur radios come in different sizes. You can put some amateur radios in your shirt pocket while others need half a room for storage. Choose something that is the most convenient for you and your needs.
If you are interested in this kind of thing, you can join a group of people called amateur radio DJs to share experiences and knowledge with them.
A ham radio is useful because you can use it to communicate with friends in your neighbourhood or friends in other countries. Just study a bit about amateur radios, get your license, talk with friends, and have fun using this cool technology.
